Does Modern Life Steal Our Sleep?

Drilling wood to make fire and invention of electric light bulb bring light for humans. This also enriches humans’ night activities. The coming of industrial revolution extends people’s labor time. People often blame the sleep deprivation to these inventions and human progress. However, a study shows that modern humans don’t get less sleep than their ancestors. In fact, we may have more.

In the study, the sleep habits of people living in contemporary hunting society in part of Africa and South Africa are observed. Researchers find that these people get less than 6.5 hours’ sleep every night, which is less than the average American with 7-8 hours of sleep.

“We find that contrary to much conventional wisdom, it is very likely that we do not sleep less than our distant ancestors,” Jerome Siegel at the University of California told Live Science in a interview.

Our sleep time is increasing, not reducing. With current sleep time, we completely get enough energy to work and study.
