What Is Tencel?

Tencel is a brand name owned by Lenzing Fibres, meaning rayon or lyocell. Rather than being woven out of fibers from the cotton plant, Tencel fabric made out of cellulose from wood – more specifically, eucalyptus trees.

History and Manufacturing Process
Lyocell is a form of rayon which consists of cellulose fiber made from wood pulp. It was first developed through the pilot stage by (the now-defunct) American Enka in 1972, and they called it Newcell. Later, the fiber was commercialized by Courtaulds Fibers in the 1980s. In 1990 the first plant was opened in Mobile, AL, and Courtaulds renamed the fiber “Tencel.” When Lenzing AG purchased the Tencel plants in 2004, they combined it with their lyocell business, but they kept the Tencel® name. They are the only major producer of lyocell fiber. Tencel lyocell is manufactured from the pulp of eucalyptus trees and is spun by solvents in a closed-loop process.Because its properties and manufacturing processes were so unique, the Federal Trade Commission designated the fiber as a separate fiber group under the rayon category.

Tencel Means Comfort
By whatever name, Tencel is best known for its comfort. It flows like rayon, resists wrinkles like a polyester knit and it as absorbent as terry cloth. All these qualities are blended together to create a lightweight, durable, color-rich, easy-care, flattering and affordable natural textile. Because it’s a natural material, Tencel breathes well, and with high ability to resist wrinkles making it the perfect bedding collection textile.

Caring for Tencel
Ease of care is one of Tencel’s most popular qualities. Machine wash and dry your Tencel bedding collection according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and you can expect pieces to maintain their rich color and flowing fit for years to come.
