choosing the best pillow for neck pain

Everybody is unique and wants their pillow shaped in accordance to their individual preference. We all want to find a suitable pillow that is different from others as it comfortable shapes to your neck and head in any position while maintaining the right support all night long to ensure you a better night’s sleep. So here we just compare the different position sleeper, and give you some pieces of advice on choosing the best pillow for neck pain.

Sleeping Position

People have various preference when it comes to sleep positions, but choosing the right pillow is key to either avoiding or aggravating pain in the neck. For example a stomach sleeper using a memory foam contour pillow is surely going to suffer due to the high loft and increased firmness. Also, a back sleeper using a very soft pillow with hardly any loft will also suffer due to the lack of support. Therefore it’s important to acknowledge the importance of choosing a pillow based on your chosen sleep position.

Back Sleeper

The best pillow for back sleepers which avoids pain and damage are ones which provide adequate support for the natural curvature of the spine, also supporting the head and shoulders. Considering there are many kinds of choice, ideally what suits the back sleeper is one of a medium thickness which is also of medium firmness that can cradle the head in its natural position. A typical recommendation would be a standard shaped shredded memory foam pillow due to the ability to mold and conform to the required shape behind the head and neck and also because they are easily adjustable. Additionally, contour pillows are good too but ones which are quite high will have an adverse affect; anything under 4 inches high should be fine.

Stomach Sleeper

A stomach sleeper means the head is lifted at an angle which creates backward pressure on the neck (and spine) so anything too high will eventually either cause or aggravate problems. The oblong traditional shaped is suffice, low and plush yet supportive is ideal. Therefore in this condition, the best choice for stomach sleepers, is  often filled with memory foam. Feather pillows are also suitable, due to their soft yet supportive properties.

Side Sleeper

For the side sleeper it’s just as important to have the right pillow because there is scope for strain and misalignment can easily occur if it’s too high or too low. Whilst sleeping on your side, once the natural angle is bent too much to one side it will eventually lead to a sore neck. Therefore in order to maintain a good posture and without painful aches, the best pillow for side sleepers are ones with medium loft and which tuck under the neck but not too far down to the shoulders. There are a number of suitable types, such as cervical or contour pillows of any filling, and the traditional style too but ones which are medium / firm in order to provide good enough support.
